Melange & Mouliné Look: Menswear Fabric Trends Spring/Summer 2027

Collage of menswear Spring/Summer 2027 fabric trends featuring Prince of Wales checks, melange plains, mouliné knit structures and a menswear silhouette from the Italtex Contemporary Menswear trend forecast.

Rustic textures and tailoring traditions come together in the “Melange & Mouliné Look” direction for Spring/Summer 2027. Classic menswear fabrics are reinterpreted through melange effects, contrasting mouliné yarns, and lightweight constructions that soften formal patterns without losing their identity.

From cool wool checks to knitted jackets inspired by woven menswear, the emphasis shifts towards surfaces enriched by yarn character and texture. Rather than appearing perfectly uniform, these fabrics develop their character through colour mixing, texture, and construction.

Colour direction: chalky neutrals, olive hues and navy depth

The palette is built around chalky neutrals that reinforce the relaxed character of the fabrics. Coconut Milk and White Swan introduce soft off-white notes, while Silver and Wood Ash contribute muted grey and beige undertones that enhance the appearance of melange yarns and textured surfaces.

Olive Green brings an earthy nuance to checks, faux-plains and knitted constructions, while Dark Sapphire introduces depth within stripes, mouliné effects and classic menswear patterns. Rather than relying on strong contrasts, the colours interact through yarn mixing and fabric structure, allowing patterns and textures to emerge with a natural and understated appearance.

Yarns and materials: character through melange and mouliné effects

Melange and mouliné yarns form the foundation of this direction, creating surfaces characterised by subtle colour variation and a naturally textured appearance. Rather than relying on elaborate constructions, many fabrics develop interest through the interaction of differently coloured fibres within the yarn itself.

Cool wool qualities are paired with cotton, linen and selected viscose blends, introducing a balance between refinement and rustic character. Melange effects soften the appearance of plain grounds, while contrasting mouliné yarns bring movement to knitted jackets, stripes and small-scale patterns.

The result is a range of materials where texture emerges from the yarn composition, lending depth to both woven and knitted fabrics without the need for strong colour contrasts.

Weaves and constructions: tailoring patterns reinterpreted

Traditional menswear constructions are reinterpreted through lighter structures and textured surfaces suited to the Spring/Summer season. Prince of Wales checks and small geometric patterns retain their tailoring heritage while appearing softer through the use of melange yarns and reduced colour contrast.

Alongside these classic motifs, plain-weave constructions develop a more relaxed character through mouliné effects and irregular yarn mixtures. Faux-plains emerge from the interaction of differently coloured warp and weft yarns, creating understated surfaces that reveal their complexity on closer inspection.

Knitted structures further expand this direction, drawing inspiration from woven tailoring fabrics through stripes, small-scale patterns and textured grounds. Across both woven and knitted constructions, the emphasis remains on material character and surface interest rather than sharply defined pattern contrasts.

Pattern direction: understated tailoring motifs

Checks, stripes and small geometric motifs remain central to this direction, reflecting the enduring influence of classic menswear tailoring. Their appearance, however, is softened through melange and mouliné yarns that blur outlines and reduce the contrast typically associated with formal suiting fabrics.

Prince of Wales-inspired checks develop through textured yarn combinations, while fine stripes emerge within knitted constructions characterised by subtle colour variation. Small-scale geometric effects often appear integrated into the fabric ground, creating surfaces where pattern and texture become closely connected.

Rather than serving as decorative elements, these motifs contribute to the overall character of the fabric. The result is a pattern direction that maintains recognisable menswear references while expressing them through softer contrasts, mixed yarn effects and relaxed summer constructions.

This direction is explored in the Italtex Contemporary Menswear Colour and Fabric Trends Spring/Summer 2027.
